The Importance of Silence in Life

As meditative practices are becoming more popular, there are lots of people asking about the importance of silence. What is the importance of silence? Is it really helpful in our daily lives? As a person who is inherently silent his whole life, I must say that I’ve already experienced these benefits even before meditation became popular. So, I am here to explain the importance of silence in life.

The importance of silence in life is that it brings us some downtime which can be used to relax, self-reflect, and make time to enjoy the moment. This in turn makes us more aware of ourselves and generally happier as we become more appreciative in life.

In this article, we are going to discuss each of the importance that silence gives to our lives. While I have already given a summary above on the importance of silence, I still need to identify each of the importance or benefits one by one so I can give you a clear message on the importance of silence.

What are the importance of silence in life

In general, the main importance of silence in life is that it gives us downtime. The downtime is important for us to stay in the moment and concentrate better leading to deeper thoughts. These deeper thoughts help us become more productive and understand ourselves better.

Below is the importance of silence in life. I have identified 8 benefits and I really hope it would allow you to be motivated to try some downtime.

1. Silence offer us time for Self-Reflection

One of the importance of silence in life is that it makes us reflect on ourselves.

In life, self-reflection is very important as it makes our actions more in line with our goals and dreams in life.

As an example, the idea that I want to share what I know is because of self-reflection, I thought that it would be nice to share what I learned with people so, I decided to make this website.

Furthermore, I also got from my reflection that not all things can be easily explained through blog posts so I decided to make a YouTube channel to have a different mode of giving information.

Because of sitting in a place and being quiet, I was able to think deeply about my goals and aspirations in life.

Perhaps, if you’re going to ask me, this is the most important reason to try being silent from time to time. It gives us time to reflect and be in line with our goals.

Thus, I suggest often suggest people try self-reflect even once.

2. Silence Gives Time for Deeper Thoughts

Once you’ve tried being silent, what usually happens is that your brain will try to think more.

This series of thinking inside our brain leads to deeper thoughts.

Usually, good ideas come from two things.

  • One is usually from some hunch where suddenly, someone got an idea. An example of this is the post-it notes by Arthur Fry.
  • Another is the ideas that come from deeper thoughts such as the Theory of Relativity by Albert Einstein.

In my personal example, my idea of trying to build a blog and a YouTube channel came from deep thinking which came from self-reflection.

The idea of how silence brings deeper thoughts is that it forces us to focus on our thinking. Since we aren’t doing anything, our brain tries to think of a lot of things.

Getting ideas is relatively easier when we are in deep thought and silence is a way to go if we want to concentrate better which would be discussed in the next section.

3. Silence Helps Us Concentrate Better

One of the main benefits of silence is that it helps us concentrate.

When we are free from distractions, we usually become better since our brain is not good at multitasking.

That is why most can study or work better in places where they are alone and without any distractions.

This is because distractions and notifications actually break the silence that we need to concentrate.

As an example, I am making this article while using a white noise app in order to block any sound that would distract me.

This concentration while writing makes me finish a 1,000-word article in about 40-45 minutes.

4. Silence Helps us have Downtime

One importance of silence is actually downtime.

With our environment right now bringing us news all over the world, it can be hard just to sit down and relax.

There is just a feeling that the world is just changing fast which makes some people anxious. It is also noticeable as it is easy to see some quotes on social media about the importance of hustling all the time.

The problem is that we are still human beings that need some rest.

What do you think is the reason why some people just prefer packing their things and traveling the world?

The usual reason for this is that it helps them have some downtime as city life can sometimes be too fast for us.

The importance of downtime is that it forces us to live and enjoy the moment. It is the time we give to ourselves or our family.

While it is true that the world never sleeps, time flies and prices change a lot, we still need some downtime.

That’s why you will see people enjoying a cup of coffee or tea resting. Downtime just makes them feel better.

If you always feel like everything is in rush, then it is good to think of some downtime. I believe that silence is one of the tools you can use to have some downtime even without having a vacation or some coffee.

As long as you give yourself some time to just sit back, it is called downtime.

5. Silence Helps Us Learn Faster

In one of the articles, I explained why concentration is helpful in learning.

In fact, when we are just concentrated on a single task, we become much more efficient in both workings and in studying.

When I was a student, my routine was to actually wake up at 4:00. go to school at 5:30 AM, then use the time from 5:30 until my first class to study.

I make sure that when studying, I am in a place with no distractions which means that a place that is very quiet.

I am the type of person who studies secretly. This is because I just see it as an effective method to make me learn more with less time.

With the increase in focus from silence, you can easily learn more and ultimately, it helped me graduate with honors.

6. Silence Helps us Enjoy the Moment

I have explained that silence is important in giving us some downtime.

What I also need to explain is that silence or time for ourselves is important in order for us to appreciate the moment.

What I mean by this is that people who are not allowing some downtime are the same people who always feel like the world is moving fast and they would always try to keep up.

This leads to burnout.

Because they are always trying to work for their future without trying to keep their ground, they would always feel like something is missing.

While there is nothing wrong with planning and working for your future, you will need to enjoy and appreciate the things you have now.

Enjoying the moment with silence makes us realize the things we have now that we can appreciate. Simple things such as having a roof above your head or a loving family are things that we usually overlook.

That’s why some people say that we only appreciate things when they’re gone.

Try to see the things that you have at the moment, keep your feet on the ground and you would be happier.

What I mean is this.

There is nothing wrong with planning and working for the future. But we need to have a balance where we appreciate what we have right now. Appreciating what we have right now can be easily done with self-reflection with the help of silence. What we need is balance.

7. Silence Decreased Stress

I have explained that the continuous feeling that you’re left behind is a big source of stress.

With silence, we can start to appreciate what we have right now and decrease our stress levels.

Try to relax once in a while and silence can actually help you in that.

8. Silence Increases Productivity

In all honesty, silence is the one that helped me progress in my career as a blogger.

When everything is silent, I can focus more on my tasks which makes me finish a lot with less time.

This is because I try to remove anything that breaks my focus when working. In fact, I believe that this is one of the most important benefits I’ve experienced.

Aside from self-reflection, just the increase in productivity has helped me progress in my career as a blogger.

As you can see, not only does silence helped me be generally happier, it also made me more productive. Even with a fast-changing world and having my career in line with technology, I was able to keep my feet on the ground thanks to silence.

Only the things I love.

Recommended Books

The next thing is books. Books are, for me, one of the cheapest ways to get invaluable information. We can learn personal development, finance, career, relationships, and many more from books.

Here, I will be listing my favorite books in different categories.

  1. For Beginners7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – Personal development has a lot of concepts and ideas to learn. Thus it can be really hard for beginners to know where to start. Thus, I recommend this book since all the basic concepts of personal development are here(except finance, check what I recommended for that)
  2. ProductivityThe One Thing by Gary Keller – This book teaches us the power of focusing on one thing which is the ultimate source of productivity. The concepts taught are what I am using to constantly publish YouTube videos while maintaining this website.
  3. Busy?Make Time by Jack Knapp – This book teaches us how to make time for the things we love. The concept is really simple but I think that makes it a book worth reading.
  4. HealthLifespan by Dr.Sinclair – This Book teaches about the latest scientific research on lifespan. In his book, he has shared numerous things he is doing to slow down his aging process. This can be as easy as eating less which he recommends.
  5. FinanceThe Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason – Perhaps one of the first books I’ve read about Finance, this book for me is the best if we are talking about learning basic finance such as basic saving and investing. The concepts are very simple but effective.

Audiobooks

Take this advice as a grain of salt.

I don’t recommend buying Audiobooks one by one. I mean, audiobooks can be quickly finished by listening while working out or doing some mindless tasks.

So here is to save you some money. Just go for a monthly subscription to Audible. I believe that you will save a lot of money with that plus, they usually give freebies to anyone starting.

My Audiobook Recommendation will always be the same as my book recommendations, but I personally like The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. I like how she is so casual while reading her book.
