What does Personal Development Teach Us?

I’ve been learning about self-improvement for years now and until now, I am still learning new things. Self-improvement teaches us a lot about life, we learn a lot from various courses, talks, books, podcast,s and articles. But overall, what does self-improvement teach us? What can we learn from personal development?

We can learn from personal development that we should improve and work our way in order to reach our goals in life. Improving ourselves will help us reach our goals faster because we can apply the things we’ve learned in our lives. This leads to finding meaning and a happier life.

As I’ve said in one of my article on the purpose of self development, it is to find purpose, meaning and having a happier life. This is because the goal in self development is to find the one that suits with your goals. If you are interested in that article, here is a link for you to check out: What’s the purpose of personal development?

But in this article, we are going to expound on learning we can have from personal development, plus what is the importance of learning it, and why is it really important to know yourself.

What can we learn from Personal Development?

What we can learn from personal development is that there is no one size fits all. This means that while there are a lot of tips for self development, you need to find the one that suits your needs. This way, it can help you be more proficient and improve in order to reach your goals in life.

While there are lots of things you can do for your personal development, such as reading, meditating, social media detox, learning courses, productivity tips, and more, it does not end there. You need to find the one that fits your goals in order for us to succeed in life.

The things you can learn about personal development are definitely a lot. How to be more productive, How to be happier in life, or How to be better social skills.

But it will be nothing without the application.

For example, one of the key things in self improvement in how to be happier is to start appreciating little things in life. While you might know about this, if you do not apply, then it will useless.

Another is that to increase your confidence and social skills, you have to start practicing good manners because people are looking for that in conversations. However, if you don’t apply it, then what’s the point?

If you are interested, here is an article that gives 25 tips to improve social skills in confidence. Those are what I’ve learned through the years of self-improvement when it comes to social skills.

What I’ve learned in all of those personal development is that it is irrelevant how many self improvement courses you’ve taken. It is a matter of finding what fits you and applying them.

That is why there are conflicting ideas in self improvement, it is not because one if correct and one is wrong, it is because we are all different from each other.

Here is an example: One famous personal development tip is to work smarter not harder. Guess what, this doesn’t apply to all including me.

I am a work harder type of person. It doesn’t mean that working smarter doesn’t work. In fact, I am very productive thanks to the tips given on how to work smarter.

But it seems that I am a person with a hustler mentality and what fits my personality is to work hard because I find the process of reaching my goal to be enjoyable.

If you are someone who doesn’t care much about work and just find joy in getting money as easy as possible, or someone who has a big dream that is irrelevant with your work, then working smart will be a good idea. But not for me.

It is not that I or you are wrong, it is just that we are different in that aspect.

And there are many more aspects that we can be different from each other.

So one thing to remember upon learning lots of personal development is that there is no one size fits all, it is a matter of what fits to you.

What is the importance of learning personal development?

The importance of learning personal development is to help us reduce our mistakes when finding meaning in life. This is because personal development is a compilation of things that worked for others, which might also work for us. Following what worked for others increases our likelihood of success.

Imagine a life where you are just testing everything. How to be more productive maybe I could just stay up all night working.

But does it work? One key persons for personal development in my opinion is Dr. Matthew Walker and he explained that sleep is very important in productivity and learning.

Now that you have an idea that it is not idea to pull out an all-nighter, then you won’t bother making that mistake.

That is the beauty of personal development. It is a compilation of things successful people did. It is like the road has been set, we just have to drive on that path.

The journals left by various scientists and successful people are already in there for us to take. We do not need to experiment with things that doesn’t work.

In short, it makes our lives significantly easier.

I made a book review on Dr. Matthew Walker’s book “Why we sleep”. If you are interested in the summary, then it is the article for you. It also has a video review so you can just listen to it: Why we sleep book summary

In general, personal development helps us to be more productive in life. Productivity in life whether from your work, house, or your own can lead to a more meaningful and happier life in general. This is because we learn what worked for others which may apply to us.

So even if self improvement is quite a lot to take in, there are gold nuggets that can work in our lives. It prevents us from committing errors which will make us succeed faster.

And what I’ve learned is that those paths that the successful people took are just for us to take in. We do not need to create our own road and make mistakes, we just have to follow in their footsteps.

Why is it important to know yourself?

I have stressed out in this article that self improvement should be personal so in this section, I am going to discuss why is it important to know yourself.

It is important to know yourself because only through knowing yourself will you find out what makes you happy. Finding meaning in our lives without knowing ourselves is like shooting a ball without knowing where the rim is. If we want to feel accomplished in life, we first need to know ourselves.

This is the reason why you can see successful people complaining about how miserable their life is. Or you see a successful scientist complaining that they don’t want to be a scientist anymore.

Sometimes, we are forced by our environment without regarding for ourselves and it can lead more harm than good.

If building a company is your goal because it is what you really want then good for you. If not, then do not do it for the sake of others.

Knowing yourself is also the most important in self improvement.

Know yourself first, then find the personal development tool that works for you, then stick to it.

Recommended Books

The next thing is books. Books are, for me, one of the cheapest ways to get invaluable information. We can learn personal development, finance, career, relationships, and many more from books.

Here, I will be listing my favorite books in different categories.

  1. For Beginners7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – Personal development has a lot of concepts and ideas to learn. Thus it can be really hard for beginners to know where to start. Thus, I recommend this book since all the basic concepts of personal development are here(except finance, check what I recommended for that)
  2. ProductivityThe One Thing by Gary Keller – This book teaches us the power of focusing on one thing which is the ultimate source of productivity. The concepts taught are what I am using to constantly publish YouTube videos while maintaining this website.
  3. Busy?Make Time by Jack Knapp – This book teaches us how to make time for the things we love. The concept is really simple but I think that makes it a book worth reading.
  4. HealthLifespan by Dr.Sinclair – This Book teaches about the latest scientific research on lifespan. In his book, he has shared numerous things he is doing to slow down his aging process. This can be as easy as eating less which he recommends.
  5. FinanceThe Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason – Perhaps one of the first books I’ve read about Finance, this book for me is the best if we are talking about learning basic finance such as basic saving and investing. The concepts are very simple but effective.

Audiobooks

Take this advice as a grain of salt.

I don’t recommend buying Audiobooks one by one. I mean, audiobooks can be quickly finished by listening while working out or doing some mindless tasks.

So here is to save you some money. Just go for a monthly subscription to Audible. I believe that you will save a lot of money with that plus, they usually give freebies to anyone starting.

My Audiobook Recommendation will always be the same as my book recommendations, but I personally like The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. I like how she is so casual while reading her book.
