The most important step in improving your eyesight is to first check your eye grade. You can’t improve your eyesight if you don’t have a target. The results you will have will be your starting point.

I recommend you check my video on finding out your eye grade at home for free, this is a good start so we can have a goal in mind.

In this video, I shared a tool which can be used to measure your eye grade at home. It is completely free and you only need a measuring device to measure your eye grade. Here is a link for the tool: Measure Your Eyegrade for Free at Home

3. Use the Active Focusing Tool

The tool above will give you suggestions on how you will start in improving your eyesight. It will give a proepr recommendation in print pushing and active focusing which is a good start if you want to improve your vision.

This is a sample of what the tool can do, it will give you tips on how you can start print pushing and lens reduction therapy, here is a video guide on how to do active focusing and print pushing.

4. Start doing the Active Focusing Method

Active Focusing is a form of hormesis. Hormesis is a concept in which you will induce a little strain for your body to become stronger. In fact, it is already proven by science that hormesis can even reverse aging.

A research paper from the Aging Research Reviews reviewed hormesis and its effect in aging.

The good news is we can put that into action. We can also induce hormesis into our eyes to get better. The method we can use for this is called active focusing method.

Active focusing is a concept in which we force our eyes to see clearly. We look at objects on a distance that is slightly blurry and try to focus our eyes until it becomes clear. By doing this, we are forcing our ciliary muscles to focus on the object.

With constant use of active focusing, overtime, we can expect our eyes to adjust to the distance, making our eyesight better as long as we keep the practice.

5. Do not use glasses on close-up work

Negative Lenses, also known as myopia lenses are glasses that are designed for us to see far objects. That’s why it is recommended for people who can’t see objects far away also called as nearsightedness.

The problem is while it is designed to see things far away, it is not made for near or close-up work. Doing close-up work stresses your eyes and can cause ciliary spasms or pseudomyopia.

Source: Lindberg L. Akkommodaatiospasmi [Spasm of accommodation]. Duodecim. 2014;130(2):168-73. Finnish. PMID: 24605432.

As the name implies, ciliary spasm, also known as pseudomyopia is where your ciliary muscles become strained because of doing too much close-up work.

The effect of eyestrain from closeup work intensifies if you use negative lenses.

There are 2 ways for you to prevent ciliary spasms: Do not use glasses on closeup work and use the 20/20/20 method.

6. The 20/20/20 rule

The 20/20/20 rule has been a famous advice from a lot of health professionals and doctors. It helps relax your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of doing close-up work or what others call near work.

Because doing closeup work for a long time causes ciliary spasms, this method is good as it prevents this. Every 20 minutes, you will look far away (20 ft) for 20 seconds. This relaxes your eyes and prevents eye strain.

7. Exercise and Get Fit

Exercise is actually good for your eyes. It improves your blood flow thus nutrients can easily reach your eyes. Some research even suggest that exercise can help in age related macular degeneration (AMD).

A research conducted in Shanghai University of Sport titled: “Investigation on Shanghai Juveniles’ Exercise, Eyesight Study and Sleep.” concluded that exercise plays a vital role in improving eyesight. They even showed significant difference of the eyesight exists between the female students who take exercise regularly and those who seldom do exercise.

This means that regular exercise and staying fit is a good way to go in improving eyesight.

Another thing to note is that getting fit reduces the likelihood of a person to have underlying conditions such as diabetes which is a big factor in the developments of diabetic retinopathy which happens when too much sugar is circulating in your bloodstream.

8. Get a Balanced Diet

There are various nutrients and vitamins which can help you in improving your eyesight. While these alone will not improve your vision, it is a good addition for faster results and it is also essential for your eyes to get the nutrition it needs to function properly.

Here is a table summary of the foods that are good for your eyes.

Getting enough sleep is essential to improve your vision. In fact, a research published in Scientific Reports suggest that ‘sleeping late’ is a risk factor for myopia prevalence.

Source: Liu, Xiao Nicole, et al. “Sleeping Late Is a Risk Factor for Myopia Development amongst School-Aged Children in China.” Scientific Reports, vol. 10, no. 1, 2020. Crossref, doi:10.1038/s41598-020-74348-7.

The reason for this is simple, more cause of myopia come started with ciliary spasm, also known as pseudomyopia, and the only thing to prevent this from happening is to rest.

This can be done by doing the 20/20/20 rule and not using glasses on closeup work. But the most important among all of them is to actually sleep which relaxes and gives your eyes some rest.

If you can also notice, your eyesight is better right after waking up compared to when you are going to sleep. This is because like out body, our eyes also get tired.

10. Is sunlight a factor in poor vision? Go Out Often

Sunlight, particularly the UVB rays from the sun has been found by science to help reduce the number of nearsighted kids said in a research published in Science Daily. This study from the Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science studied the outdoor effect which is a famous phenomenon among experts in the field of vision.

The outdoor effect is a phenomenon where people who go out often rather than just staying at home doing closeup work is less likely to develop myopia. This has been found out that UVB rays in sunlight plays a significant role in this.

Furthermore, doing less near work lessens the likelihood of developing ciliary spasm, also known as pseudomyopia.

11. Quit Smoking to Help your Eyes

According to the Department of Health, smoking is not just bad for your heart and lungs, but also for your eyes. In fact, they published an article where it said that: “Studies show smoking increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy and Dry Eye Syndrome.

12. Proper Hygiene When using Contact Lenses can save your eyes

Poor hygiene when using contact lenses can cause eye infections which can lead to serious eye injury. That means proper cleaning of contact lenses is essential since eye infections are a serious thing when it comes to your eye health.

85% reported at least one behavior that put them at risk for a contact lens, said a research paper from the MMWR. This means that it is a concern right now as this puts a lot of people at risk of eye infections.[1]

Trauma in the eyes can even cause astigmatism which is one of the leading cause of blurry vision. In fact, it affects 1/3 of the US alone.[2]

Natural Way to Improve Eyesight

Active focusing is a natural way to improve eyesight. It is a concept based on hormesis which focuses on inducing a little stress in your eyes to force it to see clearer. Hormesis is a concept approved by science and we can also use it in our eyes as well.

Testimonials that active focusing works

Swetha has found this website while searching the internet, she followed my advice on not using negative lenses on near work and doing active focusing religiously. As she said in her comment, she improved her vision by 0.75 diopters!

If you follow the active focusing guide religiously and taking care of your eyes, you will also see results!

Danh has been following my YouTube channel since he needs more visuals for me to explain active focusing and print pushing. Upon also following the guide religiously, he is down 1.0 Diopters! This can’t be done by any eye exercises or the promise that doing bates method can cure your eyesight in a week.

Of course, testimonials won’t be complete if I don’t include myself.

Here is my article where I explained my journey in active focusing and the things I did right and my mistakes: How I Cured my Eyesight

How can Eye relaxation improve your Eyesight Fast

Eye Relaxation can improve your eyesight fast because it removes ciliary spasm. Ciliary spasm, also known as spasm of accommodation, or pseudomyopia is a concept where the ciliary muscles inside your eye spasm because of too much close-up work causing pseudomyopia.

Eye relaxation techniques such as palming, closing your eyes, the 20/20/20 technique and getting a good sleep can relax your eyes.

Does the Bates Method Work?

The Bates Method only works on eye relaxation but not in curing your eyesight. A study from the Journal of Physical Therapy Science concludes that palming, blinking, sideways viewing, front and sideways viewing, rotational viewing, up and down viewing, preliminary nose tip gazing, and near and distant viewing which are all part of bates method only works on eye relaxation.

This means that while it can help in reducing ciliary spasm which is why people see results after doing the exercises, it will not cure the vision itself. This practice is good for pseudomyopia but not for myopia.

I believe that tools are essential, especially in improving our lifestyle. Because I am a minimalist, I only buy things that add value to my life.

In this part, I will give you the tools I use for improving my eyesight.

Myopia Calculator

First, let’s start with something free. The Myopia Calculator is something I’ve personally made for my viewers.

Go to the Myopia Calculator I’ve coded, which will give you the details you need to start print pushing and active focusing.

I also have video instructions in that blog post, making it easier to use the tool.

My Story

Alright, who am I giving tips on how to reduce your eye grade? What’s my story?

You can find my whole story here: How I reduced my Myopia

YouTube

Another free tool where you can learn more about eyesight is on YouTube.

While I do not make eyesight videos anymore, many YouTubers are out there that teach how to reduce your eyesight.

However, I am not one of them.

Of course, if you want to follow me, you can find my Channel by clicking the button below.

Tape Measure

Have a suitable measuring device. I don’t recommend cloth or simple tape measures since you must always stretch it hard when measuring.

Get a simple heavy-duty tape measure since you need to pull it out. You can also see that I’m using this measuring device in my videos.

Blue Light Glasses

Okay, one of the things you will learn from me is that preventing eye strain means getting enough sleep. Guess what? Blue light affects our sleep a lot.

That’s why I recommend wearing Blue Light Glasses at night about 2 hours before bedtime. That way, you will be sleepy enough and have a good night of sleep.

I use a yellow-colored one since it blocks the majority of blue light.

Reading Glasses/ Positive Lens

A quick warning. Do not use a positive lens if your eye grade is more than -2.00. You do not need one if your eye grade is still high.

But always get a good quality pair of these glasses since low-quality pair of positive lenses might not be very accurate.

Furthermore, some of these cheap pairs are not optical grade, which means their surface is not smooth. Non-optical grade glasses confuse the eyes.

If you are in the last stages of print pushing (-2.00 below), don’t waste your efforts by having a low-quality positive lens.

While there is a simple test for checking positive lens quality, it would be better to ensure that you have a high-quality lens.

So I recommend this positive lens which is lightweight, scratch-resistant, and accurate.

Negative Lens/ Myopia Glasses

This is one of the problems of most of my viewers; however, I’m sorry, but as of this time, I can’t give you recommendations on where to buy a pair online.

I am just lucky to befriend an optometrist who helped me get the grade I want. Let’s see in the future if I find anyone that would offer to help us get one online.

Of course, I will check their quality myself before recommending anything.

If you know someone who can help the community, go to my contact page and email me.
